Vitronic Keeps An Eye On UK Traffic
Vitronic, the machine vision specialist, introduces Poliscan-surveillance and Poliscan-smart. These unique camera-based automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems identify passing vehicles license plates and crosscheck them with a police database. If matched with a ‘wanted vehicle’, an alert is automatically sent to the relevant authority. This process takes less than a second, which means officers stationed at manual checkpoints can immediately stop suspect vehicles.
Poliscan-surveillance uses a high-resolution, auto-focus camera, triggered by a special laser-based detection unit, to capture images of passing vehicles’ license plates. The system interprets these images using optical character recognition (OCR) techniques and sophisticated computer algorithms. Poliscan-surveillance compares the results with the police database, triggering an alarm if it detects a wanted or unauthorised vehicle.
Poliscan-surveillance is ideal for multi-lane, high-speed traffic applications and mounts onto bridges, poles or overhead road gantries. A mobile version is available, which operates from a vehicle boot or a tripod. Poliscan-surveillance achieves exceptionally high read rates and uses invisible infrared illumination to read plates at night and in adverse weather. This allows the complete, automatic monitoring of multi-lane roads, 24 hours a day.
Used for monitoring moderate-speed, single-lane traffic in all weather conditions, Poliscan-smart is the compact version of Poliscan-surveillance. Using similar camera/OCR technology to produce high read rates, it identifies license plates on vehicles, working continually and requiring no separate trigger system. Where Poliscan-smart differs is its flexible design, which allows it to fit in concealed spaces. This makes it ideal for town and city centres. Like Poliscan-surveillance, it is available as a stationary or mobile unit.
Malcolm Smith, UK Sales Manager at Vitronic, is positive; “ANPR technology allows police to monitor roads and urban areas effectively. Vitronic’s Poliscan products are highly advanced and unlike other ANPR systems, read international license plates. This makes them versatile and suitable for a wide range of applications. In addition, the triggering system for both systems is inbuilt, which eliminates the need for costly on-site infrastructures.”
ANPR is proving invaluable to police. Abroad, Poliscan-surveillance and Poliscan-smart identify wanted vehicles and combat car theft, tailgating and motor tax evasion. They protect international borders and monitor town and city centres, keeping the roads safe and free of crime. Vitronic aims to bring similar success to the UK.
