Vitronic’s Handheld Portable Scanner
Vitronic, leading provider of camera systems for warehousing and logistics, announces its new portable handheld camera scanner, VICAM-mobile. Used to scan labels on parcels and pallets in goods-in and goods-out areas, the device captures important routing information, which is used in parcel sorting and tracking to improve efficiency and reduce manual handling requirements. Weighing just 800g with ergonomic, user-friendly controls, VICAM-mobile is light and comfortable to hold, meaning operators can work longer and more efficiently.
Using Vitronic’s handheld VICAM-mobile, operators can identify customer related data on parcels quickly and accurately. Unlike handheld laser scanners, VICAM-mobile reads badly damaged or incomplete barcodes, human written addresses, quantity data, and supplier numbers. Its high-speed, auto-focus, line-scan camera captures high-resolution, photographic images of parcel labels within an area of 300mm x 300mm. The system automatically identifies the relevant data (regions of interest) and interprets it using optical character recognition (OCR) techniques and sophisticated software.
The handheld VICAM-mobile is compact, cost effective and ideal for use with goods that are normally difficult to process, such as irregularly shaped parcels. Robust and reliable, it operates up to 20 times faster than laser scanners and boasts a read rate of 99.9%.
In the unlikely event of an unreadable label, VICAM-mobile sends the image to a videocoding workstation via a quick, intelligent network, where the operator manually enters the information. This saves diverting the parcel off the line for later sorting. VICAM-mobile is compatible with VIPAC, Vitronic’s popular camera-based parcel recognition system.
