Green Light for Vitronic’s Traffic Systems
Vitronic, the machine vision specialist, has launched its unique toll and speed enforcement systems into the UK - TollChecker and PoliScan. Both offer huge advantages in terms of accuracy, reliability and speed. They will be popular with local authorities that face increasingly high traffic volumes.
Vitronic designed and supplied the Toll Collect system on the German Autobahn road network. It incorporates over 300 gantries placed across the road network throughout Germany.
Automatic toll collection relies on precise traffic classification to ensure fair treatment of road users. TollChecker builds a 3D image of each passing vehicle using laser scanning. This allows the system to accurately measure the vehicle’s length, height and width, and perform automatic axle counts and trailer detection. It can also communicate with on-board Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) units in the vehicles. This unique classification technique means the fair application of toll charges, according to the size and type of vehicle.
TollChecker operates in seconds, providing real-time alerts and incorporating international license plate recognition. This means officers at manual checkpoints can immediately pull over suspected violators, maximising deterrence. Mounted on gantries or single poles, TollChecker is suitable for carriageways, motorways and even urban areas. It can be set up in just four hours, minimising traffic disruption.
PoliScan sets new standards for speed enforcement. It automatically detects violators by using LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to measure the exact speed of passing traffic. LIDAR, based on lasers, is new to the UK and eliminates the need for costly on-site infrastructures, such as radar light barriers. It allows PoliScan to monitor multiple vehicles in multiple lanes.
When an offence occurs, sophisticated cameras capture a high-resolution photographic image of the vehicle, in which the number plate and driver are clearly visible. PoliScan adds this to a computerised case file, which contains all incident related data. Encrypted to prevent manipulation, this has its own certified electronic signature and provides indisputable evidence of the offence.
PoliScan is ideal for both mobile and stationary traffic monitoring. The system measures reliably, even on bends and in bad weather. It is simple to set up, easy to use and set to revolutionise speed enforcement in the UK.
